Coming Again Fall 2019

Come and learn the ancient magic of the nixtamal method of turning grain corn into tortillas and other foods. 

Hands on learning led by guest chef Alan Ace of Chisme Tortilla, an expert in the art of handmade organic corn tortillas.  Discussion led by Amelia McDonald, Farm Manager and Owner, McDonalds Urban Farm.  Participate in turning the organic grain corn grown right here into food and join the discussion about what role grain corn plays in the broader conversations about sustainability, self-sufficiency, non-GMO grains, and drought-tolerant food.

Class is $35 per person.  Includes a snack and farm tour.

Urban Chicken Keeping Class

Our Beginning Urban Chicken Keeping Class here at McDonald’s Urban Farm

Class will cover all the information you need to know to start raising your own backyard urban chicken flock!

April 14, 2019

2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Topics include: chicken breeds (for personality and egg color), purchasing and raising day-old chicks vs. mature chickens, safe coop design for your chickens, rules for Pasadena/Altadena/Surrounding Areas, best feeding practices, and the rewards of backyard chicken eggs.

Our class includes a farm to table snack and a farm tour.

Adults and children age 8+ are welcome.

The Business of Urban Farming - February 17, 2019

You will walk out of this class with the ability to start your own urban farming business. Be a part of this unique opportunity to absorb years of hands-on knowledge of how to navigate the complex rules and regulations in Los Angeles County that govern urban farming.

This class is for beginning Market Farmers or Backyard Farmers who are ready to take it to the next level. You can do this!

Topics covered will include:  Cottage Food Permit (canned jams, etc.); Egg Handlers Certificate (State of California); Certified Farmers Market Producer Certificate; Backyard Meat Exemption, Vacant Parcel Property Tax Exemption; and more. 

Class led by Amelia McDonald, Farm Manager/Owner of McDonalds Urban Farm, who also happens to be a recovering lawyer* who has navigated the ins and outs of the county and state permitting processes. (*This class is not “legal advice”.)

Class is $129 per person or $199 for for two future farmers! Class will be 3 hours and will be very detailed. We will talk, walk the farm, practice labeling egg cartons for sale, and much more. Includes a binder of written materials to take home + farm tour + snack + a mentor for life.
